EXHIBITIONS / Julio Maruri

18 December, 2003 - 18 February, 2004
Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander - Mercado del Este, Santander
Curated:
José María Lafuente, Salvador Carretero Rebés

The facet of the Cantabrian poet Julio Maruri (Santander, 1920) as a painter was relatively unknown in his homeland. The aim of the exhibition bearing his own name was to recapture and disseminate the depth and scope of his career in the visual arts. The selection of his paintings on display in the former Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander (now the Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria, MAS) was complemented with diverse documentation on his life from the Lafuente Archive, which was exhibited in a separate location at the city’s Mercado del Este. Prior to the painting exhibition, the Lafuente Archive carried out a painstaking inventory and catalogued Maruri’s work distributed across France, the country in which the painter and poet spent part of his life and where a great deal of his works are to be found in museums and private collections.
