EXHIBITIONS / Books Beyond Artists: Words and Images

24 February, 2015 - 09 May, 2015
Ivorypress Space, Madrid
Curated:
Elena Ochoa Foster

Books Beyond Artists shows book-objects and highly-limited editions made by artists such as Paul McCarthy and Anselm Kiefer, which are displayed alongside pictorial and sculptural books with minimal or even non-existent text. The works shine the spotlight on the image, the sculpture or the painting.

The exhibition will include publications by Francisco de Goya, William Kentridge and Anthony Caro, among others. Books Beyond Artist will also show artist books made by leading figures in contemporary art such as Louise Bourgeois and Damien Hirst. In some of them, design and the chosen materials take centre stage: from the paper folds in books by Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Lucio Fontana and Hiroshi Sugimoto, to the use of natural materials, such as in the publication by Richard Long. In others, however, the book is a vehicle for protest or it is used as a manifesto, as in the works by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Santiago Sierra and Martin Parr. The exhibition also includes books by Jenny Holzer and Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, in which the written word is the only subject.
