COLLECTION / 1945-1989 / Spain / Pura Vida - El Canto de la Tripulación (Alberto García-Alix)

2,200 items.

The collection Pura Vida - El Canto de la Tripulación (Pure Life - The Crew’s Song) comprises some two thousand and two hundred items, most of which are related to the publishing initiative that Alberto García-Alix undertook in the late eighties together with a group of friends and collaborators. The first issue of El Canto de la Tripulación «is a collective breath of fresh air that lays down the commitment, conceptuality and heterodoxy that the magazine would come to be defined by (...) What was extraordinary, what was immense, was within it. The outcasts and artists who together endeavored to create a world in its pages were unabashedly irreverent, amusing and somewhat roguish in spirit and did not abide by norms or rules other than the creative and proper ones pertaining to their respective natures. (...) Their radical libertarianism was supported by a mafia-esque concept: they all rowed together» (García-Alix, 2020). Among the crew members, the names Fernando País, Ceesepe, Javier de Juan, Borja Casani, Quico Rivas, Carlos García-Alix, Ana Curra, Antonio Bartrina, Javier Esteban, Luis Pita and José Luis Santalla stand out.

An independent, fringe publication, with print runs of between 1,000 and 2,500 copies, the ten issues that make up the collection El Canto de la Tripulación (1989-1997) can be viewed as a joint venture, as evidenced by the multiple preparatory materials preserved: from originals, mockups, photographs, drawings and texts, to posters, invitations and curtains used for the presentation parties of the issues.

All this is accompanied by original works and unpublished texts, documentation and correspondence related to the magazine, including a set of readers’ letters sent from prison.

In 1994, García-Alix promoted the creation of a racing team, the Pura Vida Team, with which he competed in the Campeonato de España de velocidad (Spanish Speed Championship) in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Photographs, originals, documents, ephemeral material and a racing suit are preserved from this project.
