COLLECTION / 1945-1989 / Spain / Joan Estrada and La Cúpula

700 items.

Joan Estrada (Barcelona, 1951). In his youth he joined the theater group Roba Estes —Xist… hi ha roba estesa (1978), which was performed all over Spain, Faraón, faraón (1982), etc.—, with whom he founded the artistic space Cúpula Venus, in a premises at the end of the Rambla above the Principal cinema in 1978. The following eight years were an intensely active period for the Cúpula Venus, where cabaret, music, theater and transformism mixed and a diverse array of artists performed, including Pepe Rubianes, Loles León, El Brujo, Ángel Pavlovsky, Gato Pérez and Oriol Tramvia.

Its main artist would be Christa Leem (Barcelona, 1953-2004), striptease legend in the seventies and eighties, first at the Molino and then at the Cúpula Venus, with her shows «Para Cúpula con Amor» (1982) and «Christa Leem» (1985). Muse of the gauche divine, Joan Brossa created a number for her (Teatro Arnau, 1977), and starred in the musical «Rocky Horror Show», by Ventura Pons, at the Teatro Romea.

Archivo Lafuente preserves over 700 items in the Joan Estrada collection, most of them photographs (more than 550) related to Roba Estesa, from performances and shows, such as Barat i viu, xata by Xus Estruch (1979), and Faraó, Faráo (1982) at the Cúpula Venus; and venues such as Barcelona de Noche, the Teatro Arnau and the Molino; film shoots by Ventura Pons and Manuel Iborra (Joan Estrada starred in the film 3x4, directed by him); along with other images of a more personal nature, of Estrada himself and of his friends, including Pepe Rubianes and Loles León. In addition, this collection contains a series of publications, press clippings and other documents. Special mention should be made of the documentation related to Christa Leem, with more than a hundred photographs of her and her family, promotional photographs, photographs of performances at the Molino and the Cúpula Venus, and of her on film shoots —Las alegres chicas de El Molino and The Rocky Horror Show, both from 1977—, as well as videos, documents and other related objects, including the robe she wore after performing at the Cúpula Venus; also notable are a couple of examples preserved in the collection of original works by the painter and performer Ocaña, such as a hand-painted fan.
