Influenced by Fluxus and Zaj, Concha Jerez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1941) belongs to the first generation of artists producing conceptual art in Spain. She was the co-curator of the exhibition Fuera de formato (Madrid, 1983), the first anthological survey of the conceptual art that emerged in Spain in 1973.
From 1976 onwards she began to explore in-situ installations, her work being characterised by the use of an extensive repertoire of interests and mediums spanning still and moving images, printed text and gestural strokes, words and silence, noise and music, found and built objects, actions and performance, radiophonic art and interactivity through sensors, as well as specific production for the Internet. Through these resources she has explored themes with social significance from a critical perspective, devising strategies of resistance and for dismantling the dominant discourse, as well as analysing mechanisms related to censorship and self-censorship, consumer society, entertainment culture, the power of the mass media to manipulate individuals, the effect of advertising, the control of political and economic power, surveillance in developed societies, and the narrow margins of freedom that democratic systems permit. Her work has been recognised with the following awards: Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (2011), Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (2015) and the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas (2017).
Archivo Lafuente holds more than a dozen items by Concha Jerez, including leaflets, catalogues, photographs documenting exhibitions and projects, such as the show Fuera de Formato, and, chiefly, original works, including one-off artist books such as 12 críticas de Arte=12 páginas de estéticas (1978), Títulos [Recuperación de 12 críticas de arte] (1978) and Fotos [Recuperación de 12 críticas de arte] (1978), as well as works such as Desarticulación de un partido político (1974), Fusilados esta mañana [Recuperación de una noticia] (1975), Intervención de un objeto encontrado inútil (1978) and Recuperación de 12 críticas de arte (1978).
