COLLECTION / 1945-1989 / Latin America / Graciela Gutiérrez Marx

80 works of art and documents.

Graciela Gutiérrez Marx (La Plata, 1942), an experimental artist and sculptor, is a pioneer of the Latin American avant-garde who began her work in the sixties associated with Action Art, mail art and various cultural movements in line with Fluxus’s anti-art stance. She graduated with a degree in sculpture from the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes of La Plata, the same university that she taught at until 1976. A year prior to this she was already involved in the international mail-art circuit, participating, since then, in over 400 national and international shows, and taking part in collective projects related to co-creation experiences. Between 1976 and 1982 she worked with fellow La Plata-born artist Edgardo Antonio Vigo fusing together ideas and images, and producing works under the name G. E. Marx-Vigo.

Over said period she participated in performances, collective actions and installations with the Compañía de la Tierra Malamada. In 1984 she spearheaded the Asociación Latinoamericana y del Caribe de artistas-correo, and that same year she founded the newspaper Hoje-Hoja-Hoy, a critical voice against the Argentine dictatorship.

In 2010 she published her doctoral thesis: Arte correo, artistas invisibles en la red postal.

On Marx, Edgardo Antonio Vigo wrote: ‘... engaged in research into her own and other people’s sense of belonging, Graciela delves into the historical information she receives and recycles what is already revised into "new reading" ... firm in her refusal to improvise, the weight of her ideas lies in the assembly of the imperfection of the living’.

Archivo Lafuente brings together a collection of documents related to Graciela Gutiérrez Marx consisting of around 100 items, among which original works by the artist (photographs, collages, mail art, mixed media, etc.), artist books, woodcuts, multiples and a handwritten text, among others, particularly stand out.
